Bibliography
of Books and Articles on the Large Hermes Head Stamps of Greece
The literature sources relative to the large Hermes head stamps of Greece are not only vast but they date back to the very early years after the introduction of the postage stamp in Greece. This bibliography was compiled from various sources, including: Anthony Virvilis' Handbook of Hellenic Philately published in 2003, the author's Index to Philatelic Literature on Greece and Related Areas published in 1992, bibliographies in the author's recently published books, and relative articles in Philotelia and Philoteliki Lesbos from 1990 to the middle of 2006. Following this brief introduction is a Table of Contents which lists the several sections of this bibliography. By clicking on the section title whose references the reader wishes to review, the cursor will go to that specific section. The first references are concerned with the official decrees and correspondence relating to the construction of the printing plates, the colors and values of the stamps and other details concerning the printing of the stamps. These subjects are discussed in the references under Introduction of Postage Stamps to Greece. The next section deals with General Studies which includes books and articles describing other issues of Greece in addition to the large Hermes heads.
The next section The Printing includes articles pertaining to the printing methods used to print the large Hermes head stamps. It should be understood that many of the references in this bibliography which are listed under other headings could also cover this subject. The section Proofs includes only a few articles on this subject.
The subject Classification has received much attention and there are many books and articles describing the opinions of various students of the large heads as to their proper classification. Some of the early references describe only two or three of the early issues because the others had not yet been issued. And one of these early references, by Vallossis in 1881, was actually a price list which nevertheless classified the large heads into categories that the author thought appropriate. It was rather crude because many of the finer details of these printings had not yet been discovered. During the next 125 years, other students published their classification systems with the Kohl Handbook and the Etude edited by Constantinides as the most authoritative. The detailed studies of Theodore Groom in the early 1900’s brought a new methodology to the classification of the large heads and they spawned further research by Garas, Bellas, Coundouros, Basel and others. Recently, in 2002, Michael Tseriotis published his classification system in a David Feldman auction catalogue The Collection (I), which was later incorporated in the Hellas Catalogue of A. Karamitsos. New ideas are still being presented on this fascinating subject.
The section entitled Control Numbers covers a subject which was studied in detail by Groom and later by many other students. The importance of the control numbers in the classification of the large Hermes heads was first proposed by Groom. An important article by Coundouros and Stassinopoulos advanced the subject and a long series of articles by Coundouros in Philotelia presented many details of the controls. This was followed by the excellent book published in 2000 by Coundouros on this same subject.
The next subject Varieties, Ink Spots and Flaws, deals with various characteristics of these issues which were not intended to be present on the issued stamps. These include scratches, white spots in the colored portions of the design, frame line dents, broken shading lines, protrusions on the neck and chin of the Hermes image, ink spots caused by inadequate cleaning of the printing plate, etc. This subject has received a much attention over the years and new discoveries are still being reported.
The section on Plating includes articles and books which deal with the determination of the plate position of an individual stamp. Some of the references cited are included under this heading and under other headings as well because they include important discussions of many of the categories presented here.
The secton on Covers is newly added because of two excellent articles on combination covers by Wolfgang Bauer. This is a complicated subject that needs more research and discussion.
The section Solferino includes many articles which discuss this rarest of all the large Hermes head issues. Recent articles by Tseriotis and Zafirakopoulos have spurred others into further investigations of this unusual stamp and subsequent publications.
The next sections deal with special studies of unusual printings such as the use of dark blue paper for ten lepta issues which normally had greenish-blue or yellowish-green papers or the deep green 5 lepta. One other controversy which still is not settled has to do with the classification of the1871 ten lepta on meshed paper; it has received much attention in many publications.
The use of bisected stamps to cover half of the rate of the issued stamp is discussed by Tseriotis in two articles. Other sections include: the naming of rare control number errors, the yellow wash on the early Athens issues, special studies and the catalogues.
This bibliography had to be limited in the number of entries because of space restrictions of the website. Many more books and articles on the above subjects are included in the indexes to the philatelic journals on Hellenic philately. Subjects covering postmarks, fakes, etc. are not included here but are available from other sources. The reader is referred to the excellent Handbook of Hellenic Philately by Anthony B. Virvilis which has a separate section on literature pertaining to the large Hermes head stamps and to indexes of journals of the Hellenic philatelic societies.
